Welcome to the world of the Sand Rabbits band !!

We are the Sand Rabbits, a local band from the SW Michigan/Michiana region. Featuring an eclectic mix of musical offerings [ from Clapton, Beatles, Eagles, Stones, Marshal Tucker, etc. ] we are a musical trio that spans genres and seeks to provide you with the most listenable music.

The Sand Rabbits band has been around since 2021. The genesis of the band goes back to around 2018(ish) when the 3 current band members -- Larry Zenk on vocals, guitar and harmonica; Fred Story on vocals and upright bass (aka "Peaches"); and Jon Kinsting on drums -- each found himself at the Red Brick Cafe [in Baroda, Michigan] attending one of the cafe's weekly open mic night events. Informal get-togethers and jam sessions followed, out of which came the Sand Rabbits. Drummer Jon named the group "Sand Rabbits", an historical nod to those lovely residents (in the 1950's and beyond) in the shanty-and-bungalow community of what is now the Silver Beach area in St. Joe.

Fred Story was born and raised in St. Joe, MI. He presently lives in Osceola, IN. He's been playing bass in bands in the Michiana area for more than 50 years, in a variety of genres. Lately he can be found beside an 80 year old stand-up bass (a.k.a "Peaches"), driving a groove. Still in a variety of genres. Larry moved to the St. Joseph, Michigan area around 2013. Looking to network and meet people, he got interested in the popular open mic venues that are prevalent throughout the area. He got some good advice and caught on to some popular venues that promoted local music. He wrote some songs and placed in the finals of the Acorn Theatre Singer/Songwriter Competition in 2017 and 2019. He is enjoying performing and has continued to pursue music as a lively interest today. A St. Joseph, Michigan native, Jon started playing drums at age 9. He quickly fell in love with drumming and music, playing both in school-based organizations as well as in local bands like "Midwest", "Cabbages and Kings", and others. Leaving St. Joseph in 1979, Jon pursued his alternate passions, computer science and mathematics, taking on a 36-year career as a computer scientist in Silicon Valley (San Jose) California. Afer that lengthy career, some life changes, and retirement, Jon moved back to St. Joe in 2015, making music the focus of his retirement years. He plays drums, teaches percussion, creates instructional videos for Drum Talk TV Channel , and handles the drum chair for the Sand Rabbits band.
